Frequently asked questions.

Why would anyone want to cruise the French Canals ?

It all begins with an idea. The idea is to RELAX. Some say the only way to relax is to go slowly—and nothing is slower than a dutch barge on a French canal! We realize this as the bicycles— and even the walkers— pass us at our furious 5-knot speed.

Why not take a hotel barge or a rental boat instead ?

First, they are always booked. Second, you get paired with people you don’t know. Third, it’s expensive. Lastly, you can’t choose where you want to stop along the way. This does not work with the relax theme.

Do you need to speak French ?

It is not essential, but knowledge of some French is a very good idea if you don’t want to be trapped all day in a lock based on the whims of the lock-master. Also, if you want a fresh baguette at the boulangerie, you had better ask about the baker’s family—- and not be in a hurry.

Do you need a license?

In France you need a license for everything. The answer is a resounding YES!

Here is the list of what we know:
1) Radio license (done).
2) Small-boat written theory test in English (done).
3) Small-boat on-water practical test test in French (done).
4) Large-boat (>20m) written theory test in French (done).
5) Large-boat on-water practical test in French (to do on our boat).

Each step requires that you apply in French on a form called a Cerfa, pay a fee, and wait a considerable amount of time.
